A Young Woman's Flight from War and Regime-Change
Xa Lili was just six years old when full-blown combat erupted in war-weary Vietnam. A century of colonial rule, followed by a bitter struggle for independence, had left the country divided, a focal point in the global conflict between Communist and Free World ideologies.
When the US withdrew and Vietnam was reunified under Hanoi, Lili was swept up in an unprecedented swell of humanity fleeing a landscape devastated by war. Her story, spanning the years of her childhood to young adulthood, represents the heritage of more than a million Asian-Americans living in the United States today.

Red Sky at Morning is a well-written, informative, and engaging narrative about how the Vietnam War affected real Vietnamese and Chinese people. I've always had a superficial knowledge of the Vietnam War and always from an American perspective. Reading about Lili's experience growing up in Saigon during the conflict deepened my understanding of history. The accompanying illustrations are gorgeous even on my Kindle so I can only imagine how beautiful they must look in the print edition. It's a compelling story. I highly recommend.Product details

Red Sky in the Morning eBook Elizabeth Buhmann JU Salvant Reviews
This is the perfect book for anyone studying the Vietnam conflict. It doesn't glorify war, it isn't biased with a political agenda, but it tells the story of how global politics uproots and scatters the families of people just trying to make a life for themselves. If you're teaching this period in history, recommend this book to your students!
I found Red Sky in the Morning to be well written and informative. Although I was in the military from 1968 to 1970 my knowledge regarding details of Lily's (Lili's) life story and information about so many individuals fleeing Viet Nam were missing or skewed. What a harrowing story turned into a blessing of opportunity. Her families work ethic is evident in hers and later generations of Asian immigrants. I would have liked a pronunciation guide included as I know her native language is not phonetic as mine was/is. The art work was nicely done and I especially liked the maps.
I highly recommend this book.
Beautiful story! Beautifully illustrated! Love to read something that opens my eyes to the experiences of others. I understand and appreciate the Viet Nam experience so much better after reading Red Sky in the Morning. I gave a copy to a friend--it's a book to share. Perfect gift.
Really amazing story. The illustrations throughout the book were also lovely.
An insightful look into the life of Vietnamese immigrant to America, Lili, interwoven with an overview of all aspects of the Viet Nam War. A quite human and engaging approach that shares personal experience and history, particularly for those too young to have lived through that time. Really takes you into the daily detail of Lili's life and experiences, and well-illustrated as well.
